NEW HAVEN — The boarding process for Avelo Airlines flights from Tweed New Haven Regional Airport is getting smoother, as the federal Transportation Security Administration made its TSA PreCheck expedited screening program available for Avelo customers, including those at Tweed.
“Starting today, traveling to one of Avelo’s 19 popular East and West Coast destinations becomes faster and smoother for TSA PreCheck-enrolled customers,” the airline said in a release Monday.
TSA PreCheck is an expedited screening program, already widely in use at many other airports in the U.S. and on other airlines, which allows low-risk travelers to enjoy a more efficient screening experience.
At most airports, travelers enrolled in TSA PreCheck don’t have to take off their shoes or belts or remove liquids, food, laptops and light jackets from their bags. In November 2021, 94 percent of TSA PreCheck members waited less than five minutes, the release said.
Avelo Customers can apply for a five-year TSA PreCheck membership for $85, it said.
“Providing Avelo Customers with a quicker, smoother and more relaxing airport experience is a big part of the different and better kind of airline we are building,” said Avelo Chairman and CEO Andrew Levy. “The availability of TSA PreCheck is an important enhancement in the convenient and seamless journey our customers appreciate when flying on Avelo.”
Avelo, a low-fare startup airline which began serving Tweed as its first East Coast base on Nov. 3, now flies to five Florida cities: Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, Tampa, Fort Meyers and Palm Beach. Flights to Sarasota-Bradenton begin Jan. 13.
Avelo flights out of Tweed currently begin at $29 each way for Palm Beach International Airport.
Avelo’s fares have no change or cancellation fees. There also is no charge for customers to make reservations by phone. Customers pay extra for amenities such as priority boarding, checked bags, carry-on overhead bags and bringing a pet in the cabin.
Flights are on single-class, Boeing Next-Generation 737 mainline jets, which are larger than the regional jets and turboprop planes that previously served Tweed for American Eagle and other airlines.
Avelo is based in Houston, with a West Coast base at Los Angeles’ Hollywood Burbank Airport.
